The 88th Academy Awards started with a bang as actor-comedian Chris Rock nailed the opening monologue with a skillful mix of social commentary and humour about racism in Hollywood, an issue that has dominated debates this awards season.
He wasted no time in acknowledging the dominance of white nominees, a situation brought into focus by the Twitter shorthand #Oscarssowhite.
The comedian stayed true to his uncompromising stand-up style throughout the opener, offering a commentary on police violence and skewering the Hollywood elite for choosing not to show up.
However, the rest of the ceremony took place as usual with one exception. Leonardo DiCaprio finally won!
