The News Minute| June 26, 2014| 8.30 am ISTSoon enough, life-sized robots could deliver the daily breakfast news. Scientists in Japan have created two life-sized ‘Android Newscasters’ who are well-equipped with all the qualities of a human newscaster. They can read news, read tweets, interact with humans and even crack jokes! The two robots, Kodomoroid and Otonaroid, were unveiled by robotic expert Hiroshi Ishiguro and are on display at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo. The human-looking robots, both female robots, can blink their eyes, twitch their brows and sway their heads from side to side. They can also converse in different languages and different voices including male ones.Huffington post says, "In a clear triumph, Kodomoroid read the news without stumbling once and recited complex tongue-twisters glibly". Ishiguro also has a humanoid version of himself which he sends around the world to give lectures in his place! Now, imagine if these android newscasters were to make inroads into the Indian market... The robots can be monitored to be more efficient; they will display a pleasant demeanor at all times and possibly deliver just news, and not views. Imagine an Indian-ized version of Kodomoroid or Otonaroid telling the nation what it wants to know at 9pm every night. Now, don’t we want that?Actually we did ask some of the journalists/anchors what they thought!Senior Editor at CNN IBN Anubha Bhonsle says- Best invention. Can we ask them for robots for ‘midnight bulletins’ as well ? Although I’ll salute them when they invent a 9pm anchor robot.Pierre Fietter with Headlines Today was relieved at the thought of robots taking over his job and says- “Threatened? I fell wonderful! Imagine: no more make-up.Smita Sharma journalist and anchor with IBN 7 wasn’t too happy and says, “Le lo hamari naukriyan!”
