A decade ago, it may have been impossible for an actress to make a comeback after getting married and having children, but two south Indian actresses are back with a bang.Manju Warrier and Jyotika who began their careers in the 1990s have both returned to the silver screen after a break of several years, and their films have been widely appreciated, even though they were technically “married” and almost written-off.Apart from sharing the decision to take a break to have children, the two talented actresses have another thing in common: their comeback films.Warrier’s 2014 “How Old Are You” about a middle-aged woman pursuing her dreams was well-received at the box office, and Jyotka’s “36 Vayadhinile” has also been appreciated, judging by the trailer and the mood of the audience.Manju Warrier Irrespective of the linguistic, regional and commercial differences that characterize the mainstream Indian film industry, there was one aspect which they all agreed on as a whole: they generally tended to view actresses as visual decoration more than as artistes. All of these industries did have phases of art cinema, but the trend among mainstream actresses has been to take a break from their careers to have children, while their actor / director / producer husbands never paused for a moment. It’s debatable whether this trend was the result of independent conscious decisions or whether it was influenced by a perception that the audience would not accept a young woman as an actor when she was married and had children.Warrier’s performance in “How Old Are You?” was so widely appreciated, that it has once again made her one of the most sought after actresses in Malayalam cinema. Given the audience’s general respect for Jyotika’s talent as an actor, the Tamil remake of Warrier’s film may also go the same way.Looks like the masses don’t really care how old an actress is anymore, and are willing to let even middle-aged actors do what they do best: act, and enthrall their audiences.
