It took almost a decade and a medical team from around the world to grow a ear out of Australian performance artist Stelarc's arm. (Yes, you read that right)
The idea first came to Stelarc in 1996, but it took him ten years to find a medical team that was willing to do it. According to a report in ABC, a scaffold was inserted underneath his skin and it took half a year for tissue and blood vessels to develop around the structure.
Not content with the ear on his arm, the artist now plans to connect it to the internet after making the organ more three-dimensional.
A miniature microphone would be inserted, which would then be capable of connecting to the internet. The ear would then be a remote listening device for people in other places.
People will be able to tune in and follow a conversation or hear the sounds around wherever the professor is. Watch his interview with a news channel.
