Samsung appears to have overcome challenges with Bixby, which has now been expanded to and is functional in over 200 countries which include the UK and Canada. The digital assistant understands only two languages, Korean and English.
Some analysts are even now a bit skeptical about the efficiency of Bixby to fully comprehend certain words and phrases, especially if the user has some kind of an accent.
When Samsung launched its flagship, Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, one of the most talked about features in the smartphones was the AI-based digital assistant Bixby and analysts believed it would give Samsung’s main rival Apple’s SIRI, a run for its money.
However, Samsung realized that it had not done its homework properly. The main difficulty was that Bixby had not been adequately programmed to take commands in English, particularly the way it is spoken in the United States. Samsung had to admit that there was lacuna in the coordination between the 200-strong technical team based out of US and the one back in South Korea.
It must be clarified that Bixby was as such functioning on the Galaxy S8 and S8+, but could not accept voice commands. Any directions inputted through texts were immediately complied with.
Ultimately, Samsung would want to make Bixby a perfect digital assistant so that it can compete on level with Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant, besides SIRI.
Some of these companies have moved beyond smartphones as far as the use of artificial intelligence-based digital assistants is concerned. There are home speakers and other devices they have launched and Samsung should consider this segment one of its strongholds. From this perspective also, Samsung needs to quickly scale up the capabilities of Bixby.
With this worldwide roll-out the company expects that Bixby will also start learning the finer nuances in the languages used in many countries and bring about improvements in its responses.
