Pushing for special category status for Andhra Pradesh, YSR Congress Party president, Jaganmohan Reddy, said on Tuesday that all seven MPs of the party will resign if the state is not given this status.

The Hindu reported that Special Category Status is likely to top the party’s agenda during the 2019 general elections.

Speaking at Yuvabheri in Kurnool on Tuesday, Jaganmohan said that all the MPs would resign after the budget session and seek re-election on the mandate of special category status.

He observed that, on the eve of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the then Prime Minister had announced special category status in Parliament.

The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Bill had also been pushed on the basis of a special package along with "incentives for the economic growth and development of the state".

However, in September, Andhra Pradesh's demand for special category status was denied, and only financial aid offered instead.

Jaganmohan stated that employment of people living in AP was hit badly as all IT, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and other companies were located in and around Hyderabad.

Special category status had been promised as a way to make up for the loss, so that all districts could develop on par with Hyderabad, he said.

He blamed Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for not pushing for the status.

“Chandrababu Naidu himself demanded special status before the elections, but now he is making all efforts to stop special status, only for his own personal and political benefits compromising the interests of the state and people,”Jagan alleged
