The Xiaomi Redmi 5A, sequel to the Xiaomi Redmi 4A, has been officially announced by the company. There are not many new features brought into this device from its predecessor; if at all, there appear to be a few downgrades only. Apart from the fact that the price of this phone might sound attractive for many, the other specs and features may not ruffle many feathers in the market.
The new Xiaomi Redmi 5A will be a 5inch display smartphone with an HD screen resolution of 720x1280pixels. The processor on this phone is expected to be the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 SoC (software on chip) that one found in the Redmi 4A as well. The RAM is 2GB. Though there were speculations that the company may release a 3GB version also with two storage variants to match, Xiaomi has stuck to a single RAM choice and 16GB internal storage. There is microSD card provision that will take the storage to 128GB.
As far as the design and appearance are concerned, this new phone will have a body that has the look and feel of metal but actually is not metal. The company says it is a better material and is lighter, keeping the phone’s weight to just 137gms. There were rumours that the display is expected to be full-screen with 18:9 aspect ratio but that is not the case.
The battery fitted on the Xiaomi will be of 3000mAh (marginally smaller than the Redmi 4A), but Xiaomi claims it will provide a standby time of up to eight days. The camera section features a 13MP sensor in the rear and a 5MP sensor at the front. The phone supports 1080p and 720p video recording. Android Nougat will be the operating system on this phone with the MIUI 9 riding over it. Some of the features included in the Xiaomi Redmi 5A are Smart assistant, Smart app launcher, Image search, Quick reply and notification management, new Home screen enhancements, Lock screen enhancements and split screen multitasking, among others.
And now the price; the Redmi 5A will cost only CNY 599 in China (roughly Rs 6,000). The company has started accepting pre-orders already.
