The News Minute | December 20, 2014 | 9.10 pm IST ‘Sankalp’, unique two day shopping fest aimed at promoting women empowerment and women's entrepreneurship has started in Kochi. Forty five individual and group women enterprisers from all over India have got the opportunity to put their talents on display under one roof through this fest. “ Sankalp provides a platform for women who face limitations in effectively using their creativity” says Priya Menon founder of Sankalp. Sankalp has had many successful editions in Palakkad, but Priya now aims to make it an annual affair in other districts too.  The stalls which sells unique products in clothing, art and craft work, handwork, handmade jewellery, life style products and food is on at the Rotary Balabhavan Panampally Nagar Kochi. “Women here are from different backgrounds, it is not their permanent occupation. I am a doctor but am interested in making handicrafts, so it is a good opportunity to enhance my passion” says Anitha a doctor, who opened a handicrafts stall at the fest. This fest has also provided an opportunity for NGOs thrive for women empowerment. " We run an organisation in Thrissur to empower women and provide them occupation. What we mainly do is to make some bags and wallets using palm leaves. Girls from poor economic background are our contributors and we sell their products through these kind of fests" Says Sister Mercy who runs an NGO A quick round through the fest and one thing is evident- this is one fair exclusively for women.
