Most shops and establishments will be closed on Saturday, as Kannada organizations call for a bandh over Tamil Nadu’s opposition to the Karnataka government’s proposed dam at Mekedatu. As the city police is gear up to ensure that no untoward incident occurs, public transport is likely to stay off the roads, but essential services will not be affected. Why has the bandh been called tomorrow? Kannada organisations have called for a state-wide bandh against Tamil Nadu’s opposition to construct a dam at Mekedatu which would boost water supply to farmers in Karnataka. However, organizations in the neighbouring state, and also the government have claimed that the proposed dam would affect the flow of water to Tamil Nadu.A bandh for a bandh The bandh is more of a retort to a recent shut down called in Tamil Nadu, protesting the Karnataka government’s plans. A massive rally would be led from Town Hall to Freedom Park. With less than 12 hours before the bandh brings the city to a standstill, here is what we know and not know. However, at the time of filing this report, both BMTC officials and Uber representatives had not confirmed if they too would stay off roads.
