Seven-time MP and a member of the Lok Sabha for more than 25 years, E Ahamed passed away at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi in the wee hours of Wednesday morning. He was a member of the Kerala Legislative assembly for 18 years.

With a sitting member of Parliament passing way while the House was in session, the Opposition, IUML and all Kerala MPs have asked the government to not present the budget.

E Ahamed was the President of the IUML when he died. Chandrika, a newspaper owned by the IUML has accused the Modi government of bypassing convention and disrespecting E Ahamed by going ahead with the budget. Not just the Left, IUML and the Congress, even NDA allies like Shiv Sena have asked for the postponement of the budget.

Pramod Tiwari, spokesperson of the Cong said, “There is time to present the budget till April 1. Will the heavens fall if the budget is postponed by a day?”

All MPs protested in Parliament asking for an adjournment.

Journalists from New Delhi who report on Parliament procedure say that according to government sources, there is no rule that Parliament should be adjourned if a sitting member passes away and it is a mere convention.

The government seems determined to go ahead with the budget citing secrecy.

The Congress and other opposition parties are most likely to boycott the budget session.
