In the wake of Rohith Vemula’s suicide, Hyderabad Central University Vice-Chancellor Apparao Podile had been on forced leave since January and had also been booked under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocity) Act.

However, with the VC resuming charge on Tuesday, protesting students at the campus went on the rampage damaging his lodge. The VC spoke to The News Minute regarding the incident and on a range of other issues.

What is your take on today's incident?

What I know is that a few students came here today (on Tuesday) to protest and it turned violent, which is undesirable in the University system. I didn't expect such things from the students of the Hyderabad Central University because I know the caliber of the students.

Will you file a complaint against the students?

University authorities will take the necessary steps, everyone has seen what has happened today at the campus. Even police and non-teaching staff and university employees have observed everything, so police will take action against the students because they have seen everything live.

When there is a case against you, should you have come back as VC?

I'm the Vice Chancellor of Hyderabad Central University and there are so many important things to do in the University, which are important for the growth of the University. The in-charge VC is not empowered to do these things like recruitments, promotions, etc. therefore I have come back. Many of my students and faculty members have asked me to come back and wanted me back so I'm here. If people have a court case on them will they not function or do their work?

Did the central government sanction your termination of leave? Are you in communication with anybody in the government regarding your return?

I don't want to bring in the government here. They have given me appointment and I'm working here so I don't have to inform the government that I am going on leave or I am joining office.

No, I'm not communicating with anyone from the central government. And I request you all not to politicize the events. I am an academician, not a politician so let's not get involved in politics. I am not interested in speaking about the politics.

Will you allow Kanhaiya Kumar inside the campus?

I don't have any idea about that boy coming here or not, but we have spoken to the senior dean and police about the feasibility because I'm not sure what will happen if he comes to the campus.

Some students have claimed that ABVP students were protecting you today. What do you have to say about that?

I don't see any student as ABVP or SFI. All I can say is that there are many students who have regular classes, who want to study, who want the labs to operate. So those students are supporting me while others are protesting against me.
