The News Minute | March 17, 2015 | 4:25 pm ISTHe makes Pink Floyd references, he honestly admits to have smoked weed and he is a Member of the Parliament.A rare combination of sorts, this was the other side of a man revealed to the general public when Tathagata Satpathy, a Member of Parliament from Odisha and Chief Whip of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) in Lok Sabha, took part in a Reddit AMA or "Ask Me Anything" on March 15 2015.Seemingly winning over Reddit users in the country, Satpathy was not only rational and logical with his responses, he also took things in a positive spirit adding a nice touch of occasional humour."I thought it would be a good way to know what people think of the present situation in India. Your questions might be a link to finding solutions to issues that are uppermost in the minds of people of a certain creed," he wrote on Reddit. Touching a variety of topics from "Should parties reveal all data related to their funding?" and his opinion on the Land Acquisition Bill and religious conversions, he also spoke openly about smoking marijuana in his younger days, when asked his views on legaliaation of cannabis in the country."Cannabis, luckily, is legal in certain states in India, like Orissa. You can walk up to a government excise shop and buy your day's need," he wrote in response to a question. The MP went on to answer more politically-relevant questions such as the efficiency of the Lok Sabha in getting bills passed. Interestingly, by the end of it not only did Satpathy win many followers, his frank views even made the BJD the favourite party of some Reddit users. Brilliant AMA by the MP from Orissa, Tathagata Satpathy. @bjd_odishaCheck it out here. http://t.co/Xtis2SS4YT pic.twitter.com/1yObR96lUf— Reddit India (@redditindia) March 16, 2015Satpathy's AMA is a fine example of using technology and social media to increase transparency in governance and not just use Facebook and Twitter handles like advertisement hoardings. Odisha MP Tathagata Satpathya was simply superb during his @redditindia AMA yesterday.
