‘What of your 50 lakh illegal immigrants claim?’: Owaisi targets Amit Shah over NRC

Claiming that the ‘myth’ created by the BJP that there were 50 lakh illegal immigrants in Assam has been busted, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said that the number of people left out of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam would reduce further if the Foreigners' Tribunals act in a judicial manner.

On Saturday, the final NRC in Assam was published in which over 3 crore people were found to be eligible for inclusion while over 19 lakh people have been left out.

Reacting to this, Asaduddin Owaisi said, “Union Home Minister Amit Shah had claimed that there are 50 lakh infiltrators, but the NRC says that it is 19 lakh. So were you lying or is the NRC is true?”

Owaisi said that the Assam BJP unit is agitated with the final list as several former ministers like Indrajit Gupta and former Governor of Assam SK Sinha had inflated the number of illegal immigrants to 40 lakh.

“Because of this myth created by the former ministers, BJP in Assam is crying foul and rejecting the NRC list. They want to bring a new law now, but this should be stopped, they can't bring out new legislation now,” Owaisi said.

“You cannot target people anymore. The number of 19 lakh itself is huge. Many people have told me that there are discrepancies in the list. I am sure that this number would come down if the Foreigners' Tribunals acts in a judicial manner and not in an arbitrary manner,” he added.

Owaisi further said that there would be a lot of problems in the coming days as over 3 lakh people are yet to submit their documents proving their nationality.

Slamming Amit Shah, he said, “After the BJP formed the government, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar and Amit Shah had met Bangladeshi ministers. Did Amit Shah ask them what will happen to these immigrants? After his two interactions with Bangladeshi counterparts did he raise this issue? The people of Assam itself are in disagreement, and Amit Shah wants NRC to be brought across India.”

Responding to the question of NRC being brought in Hyderabad, he said, “The BJP itself is caught in a tangle over the NRC list. Already they are embarrassed by the NRC list in Assam, yet if they continue, it will bring more shame to them.”
