‘We will miss you’: Rajini and Kamal express shock and sadness at Sridevi’s death

Sridevi rose to become a popular star in the south, and she was often paired opposite Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.

Hours after actor Sridevi’s sudden death in Dubai, actors-turned-politicians Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth have expressed their sadness and shock and her demise. Taking to Twitter, actor Kamal Haasan said that her stardom was well-deserved and her death is agonizing. Rajinikanth said he has lost a true friend and the industry, a true legend.

“The music of Moondram Pirai is ringing in my ears. I drew joy from witnessing the transformation of this child from a young woman to a dignified wife and then to a loving mother. The fact that I have to witness this (her death) too is agonizing. My condolences to her loving family,” Kamal said.

The 54-year old actor died in Dubai following a massive cardiac arrest. Sridevi, her husband Boney Kapoor and daughter Khushi were in Dubai to attend a wedding.

Actor Sridevi began her career as a child artist in the south at a very young age of four. In her first film, Kandan Karunai (1967), a Tamil Devotional drama, she played lord Muruga. Sridevi worked with actor MGR in films like Nam Naadu and En Annan and with Shivaji in films like Babu and Bharatha Vilas.

Sridevi rose to become a popular star in the south, working with several actors. Often, she was paired opposite Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth.

Her first lead role, was opposite Kamal with Rajini playing the antagonist in K Balachander’s Moondru Mudichu. The film came out in 1976. Sridevi plays the love interest of Kamal in the film.

The trio were seen together later in Bharathiraja’s 16 Vayathinile that came out the next year and also in S P Muthuraman’s Aadu Puli Attam. Sridevi played her iconic role of a village damsel, Mayil, in 16 Vayadhinile.

Sridevi has acted alongside Kamal Haasan in films like Manidharil Ithanai Nirangala! (1978), Sigappu Rojakkal (1978), Varumaiyin Niram Sivappu (1980), Guru, (1980), and Moondram Pirai (1982). With Rajini she has starred in films like Gayathri (1977), Priya (1978), Johnny (1980) and Pokkiri Raja (1982).
