The trailer of the Vijay Sethupathi-Trisha starrer 96 was released on Friday to high expectations. The film’s teaser that was released in July garnered positive responses, setting the bar high for this film.
The trailer begins with the younger versions of Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha’s characters. We’re introduced to Ram and Janu who share a moment in the rain as school students. We’re then shown Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha as grown-ups, probably meeting after many years in what looks like a school reunion event.
The trailer then jumps back and forth in time showing us the kind of relationship that Ram and Janu shared as preteens to what happens when they meet after a long gap. There’s palpable tension between their friends, played by Devadarshini and Bagavathi Perumal, as they hope the reunion does not end up bad.
Actor Janakaraj is also seen in the trailer. Vijay Sethupathi gushes, gets breathless and klutzy as the trailer progresses and the end leaves you hungry for more.

The film’s jukebox, composed by Govind Vasantha of 100 days of Love fame, was released earlier on Friday. Mahendiran Jeyaraju and N Shanmuga Sundaram have done the film's cinematography while R Govindaraj has edited it. Produced by Nandagopal of Madras Enterprises, the film's tentative release is reportedly September 13.
The film is being helmed by lensman-turned-director Prem Kumar, who has previously worked with Vijay in Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom. 96 marks the first time collaboration of Vijay and Trisha. According to director C Prem Kumar, 96 is a coming-of-age story, traversing three phases in the life of Vijay Sethupathi’s character.
Last seen in Mohini, Trisha has Garjanai, Sadhuranga Vettai 2 and 1818 slated for release. Vijay Sethupathi too has multiple releases including Seethakathi, Chekka Chivandha Vaanam and Super Deluxe.
