If Mammootty barely appeared in the teaser of his upcoming period film Mamangam, the trailer, released on Saturday, begins with the star's voice. The familiar lit up night from the teaser presents the background for Mamangam, which was a medieval time trade festival for warriors. Mammootty's character says, "If even one person still goes for Mamangam from Valluvanadu, it's because the women prepare a pyre of revenge in their minds. You and I were born in the womb of such women."

You see the women's faces flash -- Kaniha, Anu Sithara, veterans like Valsala Menon and Kaviyoor Ponnamma.

The slow music with which the trailer begins swiftly changes to a fast one, when fights begin and men kill men. A woman's - presumably Anu Sithara's voice -- says, "No woman in Valluvanad would shed tears for a man who has pledged to win. Or else it becomes a rain of fire."

The movie, directed by M Padmakumar and produced by Venu Kunnappilly, is described as a history of power, vengeance and hope.

Mamangam is a historical drama that revolves around the life of warriors known as Chaaverukal, who plotted against the Zamorin ruler to overthrow him. The film is based on the Mamangam festival celebrated during the 17th century, in which warriors from different parts of the country would arrive on the banks of the Bharathapuzha to fight against each other to prove their superiority.

The earlier teaser said that the film is inspired by true stories, and showed the end of a 280-year-old war. Shankar Ramakrishnan has written the adapted screenplay and dialogues. The earlier script was written by director Sajeev Pillai, who was later replaced following differences with the producer. M Jayachandran has composed the music, and the cinematography is by Manoj Pillai. Editing is done by Raja Mohammed.

The cast also includes Unni Mukundan, Prachi Tehlan, Siddique, Achuthan, Iniya and Sudev Nair, among others.

The film is being made in Malayalam and will be released in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi languages.
