There is a woman and a child who should be traced immediately. A Class 2 student tells a story of murder in class, scaring the other students and the teacher. An English song begins. The first few seconds of the trailer of Nizhal — a Malayalam film with Nayanthara and Kunchacko Boban in the lead — sets the mood of a thriller without scary music.

Kunchacko Boban is seen wearing a protective face mask for his broken nose, and takes the seat of a judge in a courtroom. Nayanthara’s character speaks of her child and has conversations with Kunchacko’s character, who is referred to as Baby. They talk about finding the “truth behind it.”

The movie is the directorial debut of award-winning editor Appu N Bhattathiri. It is written by S Sanjeev, and has five producers - Anto Joseph, Abhijith M Pillai, Badusha, Fellini TP, Ginesh Jose. Actors like Saiju Kurup, Divya Prabha and Rony David also feature in the trailer.

The film is edited by Appu and Arunlal SP. Cinematography is done by Deepak D Menon and music composed by Sooraj S Kurup.

Nayanthara’s last Malayalam release was in 2019 when she acted opposite Nivin Pauly in Love Action Drama, directed by Dhyan Sreenivasan. Actor Dhyan made his directorial debut with the film. After this, Nayanthara got busy in Telugu and Tamil, with Mookuthi Amman being her last release.

Kunchacko Boban’s thriller last year – Anjaam Pathira, directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas – was much appreciated. He played a consultant criminologist called Anwar Hussain in the film. Recently, his film Mohan Kumar Fans, a comedy, released in theatres, two months after theatres reopened in Kerala, following the pandemic.

Director Appu Bhattathiri has won the Kerala State Award for Best Editor twice, for his work in Ozhivu Divasathe Kali and Veeram. He said in an earlier interview with TNM that all the actors in Nizhal would have equal importance.
