Almost a year after its international release in 2018, Dhanush’s first foreign film, The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir, will release in India both in English and in Tamil on June 21. Its Tamil dubbed version is called Pakkiri. The film’s trailer was released in Mumbai on Tuesday.

Beginning with an introduction to Dhanush’s character in the film - Rajakumaraguru Lakshmipathy in Pakkiri and Ajatashatru Lavash Patel in Fakir - the trailer gives us a fair idea of the fun filled adventures Raja/Aja would be taking the audience through in this film.

A street magician, Raja/Aja travels to Paris from Mumbai in search of his father but ends up travelling inside an IKEA wardrobe to different parts of the world.

Starring Dhanush, Berenice Bejo, Erin Moriarty, and others, the film is based on a novel by Romain Puertolas titled The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Who Got Trapped in an Ikea Wardrobe.

The film went on to win the Ray of Sunshine Award at the Norwegian International Film Festival last year. It also won Best Comedy at the Barcelona Sant-Jordi International Film Festival in 2019.

Produced by Luc Bossi and Jon Goldman, the film’s music has been composed by Nicolas Errèra, with Vincent Mathias working the camera. The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir was shot extensively in India, France, Italy, and Libya.

The film premiered on May 30 last year in France and received a standing ovation with special appreciation for Dhanush’s performance.

The film is being released in Tamil by YNOTX, a subsidiary of Y Not Studios. Three other Tamil films are scheduled to release on June 21 - Vijay Sethupathi’s Sindhubaadh, Jiiva’s Gorilla and  the multilingual Thumbaa.

Dhanush, who is currently filming for Vetrimaaran’s Asuran, also has the long delayed Ennai Nokki Paayum Thotta up for release this year.
