The official teaser of Dhanush’s Vada Chennai was released on his birthday, July 28. Directed by Vetri Maaran of Aadukalam and Visaaranai fame, the duo is joining together for the fifth time for this gangster trilogy.

The one-minute trailer with a very slow-beat sinister gangsta’ music gives us a good glimpse of the characters in Vada Chennai. Dhanush is seen as a youngster with a funky hairstyle wearing prints from perhaps the seventies or eighties. Samuthiraakani, too, is seen sporting a hairstyle that was probably the fad a few decades ago.

The trailer progresses and Dhanush is seen is different looks - with a beard, with a shorter beard, with shorter hair. Aishwarya Rajesh appears to be one of the women he falls in love with. Andrea is also seen in different looks - a married woman, a young girl with two plaits.

The trailer hints at a longer storyline that involves gang wars, drugs and fight for power.  There are strong resemblances to Dhanush’s older films like Aadukalam, Pudupettai and Anurag Kashyap's masterpiece Gangs of Wasseypur.

Dhanush, who has given the voice-over, says, “This war will not end with one person’s death. Win or lose, we must fight. If we don’t fight back, they’ll continue to run us down. This is our home. We must fight for it. We must defend it.”

With bombs blasting and bodies falling, the trailer ends with a bloody machete being dropped on a table.

Tipped to be the most ambitious project in the career of Vetri Maaran, this film has been shot in a realistic manner, featuring raw and hard-hitting action. Rather than just focusing on the lifestyle of a gangster, it will also focus on their emotional side. It was announced earlier that Dhanush plays a carom champion in the film.

The film also stars Daniel Balaji, Kishore and filmmaker Ameer in important roles. Produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Films, Vada Chennai has music by Santosh Narayanan.
