The official teaser for Aishwarya Rajesh’s Kanaa was released by the film’s producer, popular actor Sivakarthikeyan on Thursday. Kanaa, which marks Sivakarthikeyan’s debut production, is directed by Arunraja Kamaraj.

Aishwarya Rajesh plays a young woman who wants to become a cricketer in the film. Actors Sathyaraj, Ilavarasu and Darshan are also part of the cast.

The teaser begins with a girl child being dissuaded to pursue cricket because nobody in the village plays the sport. When she approaches a coach to join the game, he also tells her that it is not for “pombala pasanga”. However, we’re shown Aishwarya Rajesh in the next shot, throwing a ball into the air as she leads a team of men. Sathyaraj, who plays her father, is a farmer in distress. We’re also shown the mother telling her that it isn’t enough if one dreams, but that one has to be determined about it.

Sivakarthikeyan makes a surprise appearance towards the end of the teaser, as an aged man. Is he making a cameo or does he have more to do in the film? We'll have to wait and watch.

With some inspiring music by Dhibu Ninan Thomas, the teaser suggests that the character played by Aishwarya makes it to the Indian women’s cricket team. There haven’t been too many sports-related films in Tamil. Chennai 600028, Vennila Kabbadi Kuzhu, Jeeva and Irudhi Suttru are a few which have hit the screens. Kanaa, with a woman lead, joins this short line-up.

The release date for the film is yet to be announced. However, the audio launch took place on Thursday and the teaser and stills from the film have greatly increased the anticipation. Aishwarya Rajesh, who shot to fame with Kaaka Muttai, has steadily been bagging substantial projects. With only the top league of heroines in Tamil cinema daring to do films on their own, without a big male actor in the cast, Aishwarya is joining an elite circle.

Arunraja Kamaraj has worked as a lyricist previously – he was the man who wrote the blistering 'Neruppuda' number from Kabali. He has also sung many songs and acted in small roles in a few Tamil films. Kanaa marks his directorial debut.
