It appears to be the season for budget smartphones, at least as far as the Indian market is concerned. The latest to be out is the Vivo Y12. The expectations earlier were that this model would be released in the country along with the Vivo Y15 last month, but the company chose to go with a soft launch and the official announcements have come in now.

The new phone sports a 6.35-inch Halo FullView HD+ display offering a screen resolution of 720x1520pixels. The display has an 89% screen-to-body ratio and you can spot a water drop notch on it. The bezels on the sides are quite narrow.

The processor chosen by Vivo for this phone is a 2.0GHz Octa-core MediaTek Helio P22 chipset which receives RAM support of either 3GB or 4GB. The corresponding internal storage levels are 32GB and 64GB respectively. The Android Pie, version 9 with the FunTouch OS 9 is the operating system.

The battery has been kept at a massive 5,000mAh. The device has reverse charging facility, something rare to see in a phone in this segment. With regard to the camera section, there is a triple camera setup in the rear, again, unusual for a budget segment phone. These are, 13MP primary sensor, an 8MP telephoto lens and a 2MP depth sensor. The front selfie camera is an 8MP sensor.

The Vivo Y12 can be purchased from offline retail stores soon.

Vivo has fixed a price of Rs 11,999 for the 3GB/32GB variant Vivo Y12 and Rs 12,999 for the higher 4GB/64GB variant.

The Vivo Y12 will directly compete in the Indian market with models like the Redmi Note 7S and Realme 3. The market for the mid-segment smartphone category is getting very busy. That augurs well overall since the buyers get a much wider choice.
