An Air India Express Flight overshot the runway as it was making its landing in Mumbai at 2.51 pm on Tuesday. All passengers are safe and no injuries have been reported. A team of engineers from Air India Express is inspecting the airplane.

The Air India Express Flight IX 213 was bound for Mumbai from Vijayawada. The Boeing 737 aircraft overshot the runway due to the slippery condition of the same, from the rains which have been plaguing the city for the past two weeks.

There were reportedly 89 people aboard, all of whom are safe.

ANI tweeted an official statement from the CEO of Air India Express saying, “Air India Express flight IX 213 from Vijayawada to Mumbai, landed & came to halt deep into the runway at 2:51 pm, overshooting the runway. Now Air India Express Engineering team is inspecting the aircraft at Mumbai airport. All passengers are safe: KS.Sunder CEO Air India Express.”

“The aircraft had touched down correctly and used maximum braking but due to the slippery conditions caused by heavy rain, the aircraft could stop only at the stopway,” an Air India Express official reportedly told the DNA, adding that, “No damage to aircraft or airport property or injuries to any person was reported and the aircraft taxied on its own power to the parking bay. Mumbai has been experiencing heavy continuous rain and the reason for the poor slippery conditions of the runway will be investigated.”

The heavy rains in the city for the past two weeks have resulted in a number of flights being cancelled or delayed.
