DMDK chief Vijayakanth is setting only one condition for political parties that want to ally with him for 2016 Assembly election: he wants to be their chief ministerial candidate.

Vijayakanth met People’s Welfare Front (PWF) on Wednesday who formally invited him on board for an alliance and he is reported to have made it clear that he wants to be the chief ministerial candidate. A source told TOI, “He told the PWF delegation that BJP is keen to project him as a chief ministerial candidate, and left it to the leaders to infer the rest.”

DMK leader Karunanidhi also approached Vijayakanth to join their alliance for the 2016 polls. In a press statement, Karunanidhi said, “When we float an alliance, we wish to have him with us. We do not know what he thinks about it,” according to TOI.

The People’s Welfare Front had till now claimed that they would announce their chief ministerial candidate after the assembly elections in 2016.

Vijayakanth was asked by the BJP state president Tamilisai Soundarajan and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan to continue with NDA alliance for the polls.

Sources told TOI that Vijayakanth has sought time before taking any final decisions.

Sources in the PWA have told The News Minute that they are very keen on having Vijayakanth on board and are actively considering handing over the CM candidate’s post to him.
