The News Minute | January 2, 2014 | 10.48 am ISTKannada daily Vijaya Karnataka will reproduce some of the cartoons of one of the best cartoonists of the country and one of its former employees R K Laxman starting Friday.One of the most widely read Kannada dailies in the state, Vijaya Karnataka is owned by the Times of India group. On Friday, the newspaper published a front-page item saying that it would re-publish “You Said It”, the cartoon-strip featuring the “Common Man” character that Laxman created. In a note to readers, the editor of the newspaper said that Karnataka had faced demands for the ban of films, similar to what is happening with the Hindi film PK at present. “When in the past the freedom of expression was threatened, how did the world renowned satirist, our R K Laxman of Mysuru respond?”Friday’s cartoon shows a man videographing a historical monument. A woman who is looking at him says: “Are you making a film on Khajuraho, Sun Temple? Be warned, the censor board may well chop it off and discard it!”The newspaper said that Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Iyer Laxman had studied in Maharaja’s College in Mysuru. Before joining The Times of India, Laxman worked for a Kannada satire magazine called “Koravanji”. At TOI, Laxman created the common man, for a cartoon called “You Said It”, which ran for over 50 years after it was started in 1951. The cartoon will appear on the editorial page of the newspaper every Friday. The text accompanying the cartoon will be in Kannada.
