Vijaya Chamundeswari responds to Kamala Selvaraj’s comments on 'Mahanati'

Dr Kamala Selvaraj, Gemini Ganesan’s daughter through his first wife, had expressed anger over the biopic portraying her father in poor light.

Kamala, who is a well-known gynaecologist, has pointed out that some facts in the film are either false or distorted and have hurt her family.

Gemini Ganesan’s daughter through his first wife, Dr Kamala Selvaraj, had recently expressed anger over Savitri’s biopic Mahanati portraying her father in poor light. She had lashed out at the makers for showing her father introducing Savitri to alcohol and not helping the veteran actor during her final days.

According to reports, reacting to Dr Kamala Selvaraj’s comments, Savitri’s daughter Vijaya Chamundeswari said in a media interaction, “I’ve seen the film from my own perception from my mother’s point of view. Now, my sister Kamala Akka might have seen the film from another point of view. It’s just a perception difference, but I won’t find any fault with my sister. She being a Tamilian might have understood the film in a different way as this is a dubbed Telugu movie. It’s true that Dad loved Mom like anything and the film is not going to create any differences between me and sister Kamala (sic).”

On Gemini introducing Savitri to alcohol, she said she agreed that he did not force her mother to drink. She speculated that Savitri might have tasted alcohol due to social drinking, which was rampant in the film industry, and grown fond of it.

She added, “That scene in Mahanati showcases that mom had a drink with dad, but it doesn’t mean she drank first time with him only (sic).”

About her family, Vijaya Chamundeswari said, “The most valuable assets I got from my father is none other than my sisters from my father through another mother. I won’t lose them at any cost. My Peddamma (Babjima), shown as Alamelu in the movie, is my great mentor and supporter. So there is no chance of losing respect for my dad’s family, which is also my family (sic).”

Mahanati, directed by Nag Ashwin, has Keerthy Suresh playing Savitri and Dulquer Salmaan playing Gemini Ganesan. Meanwhile, 10 days since its release, the film has grossed a whopping Rs 42 crore worldwide and counting. The film has entered the $2 million club at the US box office. Right from the beginning, the project had the support of Vijaya Chamundeswari, who was Savitri’s daughter with Gemini.
