Criticised by sections of the internet-literate audience for violating the concept of Network Neutrality, Facebook has now introduced the internet.org platform. Internet.org seeks to provide certain services for free on the platform and has thus been criticised by some for violating the principle that all information should be treated equally. In a video posted on the Facebook news blog, the founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg explains why internet.org would be beneficial for those who would get basic access to the Internet. The blog mentions that the service would be an “open program for developers to easily create services that integrate with Internet.org.” The approach of the service according to the blog would be to provide basic services to people and to make them appreciate the value of the internet while adding value to their lives. The blog adds that the websites were simple, wouldn’t use too much data and that developers wouldn’t have to pay to get their services enlisted on the platform. “Websites do not pay to be included, and operators don’t charge developers for the data people use for their services.” Here is the video of Zuckerberg introducing the platform.
