KG Devaki Amma, the veteran Malayalam actor and theatre personality in Kerala, passed away on Friday morning in Thiruvananthapuram. She was 97 years old. The late actor was reportedly undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.

Devaki Amma is the wife of late Kalanilayam Krishnan Nair, who founded the Kalanilayam Drama School and Thaniriram newspaper. Devaki Amma has featured in numerous radio shows and television serials. She was one of the first artistes at the Travancore Radio station and has been a part of it since its inception.

She has also anchored shows on Vanchipattu, Thiruvathirapattu, poems and light music.

She was introduced to music at the age of 8, when she performed her first music recital (arangetam) under the tutelage of her musician father. Following this, she started singing the introductory songs for the plays produced by her brother’s theatre group. Devaki Amma then went on to sing, dance and perform at several plays across the state.

A noted film actor, Devaki Amma made her debut in movies at the age of 62. Her colleague at Air India Radio and director A Padmarajan invited her to act in his film, Oridathoru Phayalvaan, in 1981. She was offered the role of a mother in the movie, which also starred  Rashid, Nedumudi Venu and Jayanthi.

Devaki Amma has played prominent roles of a grandmother in films such as Kilukkam (Mohanlal and Revathy-starrer), Kottaram Veetile Apputtan (starring Jayaram), Soothradharan (Dileep and Meera Jasmine-starrer) and Vakalathu Narayanankutty.

Devaki Amma’s funeral will be held at her residence in Poojapura on Saturday afternoon. She is survived by her children DK Kalavathi, DK Geetha, DK Maya, K Jeevan Kumar and DK Durga.
