The News Minute| July 4, 2014| 03:30 pm ISTA vacation selfie by Bethany Townsend turned into an inspiration for many who’ve been affected by Crohn’s disease and are embarrassed at the thought having their colostomy bags show for fear of humiliation. Townsend is a make-up artist and aspiring model from UK who was on a vacation in Mexico when she decided that her colostomy bags should not control her life and uploaded a selfie. Initially, she only shared it with her Facebook and Instagram friends and followers. But later, she contacted the Crohn’s and Colitis UK Facebook group and asked them if they would post her pictures on the group. They agreed and the photo inspired many other women formally ashamed of their medical condition.Crohn’s disease is a condition which causes inflammation of the digestive system and affects the patient’s ability to digest food, absurd nutrients and eliminate waste. The colostomy bags are fitted on to the body for an alternative route for the waste. The disease is more common in Europe and North America where it affects an estimated number of 3.2 out of 1000 people. It is less prevalent in Africa and South America. Bethany’s photograph has been viewed by over eleven million people and she is happy that more people, both women and men, have followed her cue.
