Uber has removed its driver from service for sexually harassing a woman employee of Tehcnopark in Thiruvananthapuram.

Santhosh Kumar, 32, was earlier taken into custody by the police but was released as the woman hesitated to go ahead with her complaint.

“What has been described is deeply upsetting. The behaviour of this nature has no place on the Uber app", the company said in a statement reports The Manorama Online.

"We internally investigated the mater and the driver partner was immediately barred from accessing the app," Uber spokesperson said in the statement.

The incident came to light when Prathidwani, an organisation for the socio-cultural activities of Technopark, filed a complaint with the Cyber City Police Kazhakuttam on June 19. The incident occurred on June 13.

According to the complaint, a woman techie hired the Uber service to travel to her home at Jagathy in the city from Technopark at 7.30pm.

During the ride, the driver misbehaved with the woman at Akkulam. He stopped the vehicle when she yelled, apologised without any expression and left.

Though the woman complained, she got a routine mail from Uber that such incidents won't be repeated, without any mention of action against the driver.

Prathidwani took up the case as a gesture of support for women employees who are reluctant to approach the police.
