Two city malls that encroached on storm water drains may be demolished: BBMP Mayor

Orion mall and Gopalan Arcade seem to be in trouble.

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Mayor BN Manjunath Reddy on Monday said that two city malls might be razed as they have encroached on a storm water drain, reported Deccan Herald

The Joint Commissioner (Rajarajeshwarinagar ward) Veerabhadrappa, said: "According to prilimnary reports, Orion Mall in Rajajinagar and Gopalan Arcade Mall in Rajarajeshwari Nagar have encroached on storm water drains. However, we have to get the joint survey report, which will come on Friday."

“The survey has been completed and it has emerged that the two malls are sitting on storm water drains,” he said.

The report quoted him as saying, “The then BBMP commissioner Siddaiah had not given permission to build the mall, but the structure had still managed to come up, which is quite shocking.”

However, Siddaiah denied sanctioning any land for the malls.

“It is an old matter, which I cannot recall at this point. But I did not sanction any mall during my tenure as BBMP commissioner,” Siddaiah said.

General Manager of Gopalan Mall, Subba Rao said he was not aware of this, however he added, “But if other buildings are being razed, then we are no exception.”
