The Lokayukta controversy reached its peak on Monday with a Kannada news channel alleging that SP Sonia Narang was ready to lodge a complaint in the internal corruption case allegedly involving Lokayukta Y Bhaskar Rao’s son Ashwin Rao. In an exclusive report, TV 9 said that Lokayukta SP for Bengaluru City Sonia Narang had received 23 complaints in connection with the alleged extortion racket being carried out in the names of the Lokayukta officials, including Rao himself. Rao has denied the involvement of his son. TV9 claimed that Narang was set to file complaints against 4 people namely Ashwin Rao, Krishna Rao alias Narasimha Rao and one V Bhaskar, whose name had so far not appeared anywhere. The channel also claimed that some of the meetings in which bribes from government officials had been demanded were held in the Lokayukta’s house, and at posh hotels. The name of Joint Commissioner of Lokayukta Syed Riyaz are also surfaced for the first time, as reported by the channel. TV9’s report further alleged that the gang targeted retired or soon to retire officials from Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Irrigation department. Posing as Lokayukta officials, they demanded bribe from officials, threatening to raid their residence or start an investigation against them if they failed to pay the sum. The channel also displayed on the ticker, three numbers that were allegedly used for making the calls, including one Delhi-based number. Even as TV ran its “exclusive” story, the Karnataka unit of the AAP approached the High Grounds police station to register a complaint against Justice Rao. However, police officials at the station allegedly refused to file the complaint saying that they needed to consult their superiors before taking action. Following this, members from the party protested outside the police station. ACP Amarnath Reddy arrived at the venue and agreed to accept the complaint and begin a preliminary enquiry into the case, AAP leader Ravi Krishna Reddy told The News Minute. “It is a well-known fact that Ashwin Rao is involved,” Reddy claimed, and added “Bhaskar Rao is incompetent, inactive and corrupt. They are damaging the reputation of Lokayukta which is a premiere institution not a ‘rehabilitation centre’ for retired judges.” Read more: Explainer: Allegations of corruption against the Karnataka Lokayukta
