A storm seems to be brewing in the Kerala Government. Statements have been coming from different quarters alleging corruption against the ruling Congress led UDF. Different factions of Congress are exchanging fire.Trouble started on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the UDF government, KPCC Vice- President V D Satheesan, who is also a close associate of the Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, told private news channels that the government is under the shadow of corruption. He further said, "Congress has an array of able leaders and, among them, Ramesh Chennithala has a prominent place. Ramesh Chennithala is the most presentable face among them.’’ He said the demand for leadership change has been set aside due to the local body elections.Meanwhile senior Congress leader AK Antony also admitted that graft is spreading through all sectors. “Corruption is on the rise in local self-governing bodies and in the appointment of teachers. We can bring an end to this scenario only if government employees are willing. It has become impossible for a common man not to shell out money to get something done,” he said.The statements triggered off a huge debate, with warring leaders and their factions taking sides. Loyalists of Ramesh Chennithala- Joseph Vazhakkan, Ajay Tharayil and TN Prathapan- backed VD Satheesan’s statement. KPCC spokesperson Ajay Tharayil criticised attempts to isolate Satheesan.To not be left behind, Oommen Chandy supporters hit back terming Satheesan’s statements as unfortunate. “Satheesan is one of the six vice-presidents of the KPCC. No KPCC functionary needs to speak for the Congress High Command,” said senior Congress leader K.C Joseph. Former Union Minister Kodikkunnil Suresh termed Satheesan as a power- craving politician who wanted a leadership change so that he could get a Cabinet berth.While addressing the media on the fourth anniversary of his government the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said he is unsure about completing his term, but the UDF government would stay in power for the full term. “I am satisfied with the performance of my government. I am getting full support from the party. There is no magic behind me completing four years in office. It was possible only because of the support from the party.’’
