1. Amid a raging row with Telangana over the cash-for-vote scam, phone-tapping and special powers to governor, Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday withdrew 10 more platoons of police and a total of 200 policemen from Hyderabad. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its approval to set up the Indian Institute of Management, Visakhapatnam, along with five others in the country. IIM-Visakhapatnam will have an initial intake of 140 students in the post graduate programme. Authorities of IIM-Bangalore, which is the mentor to IIM-Visakhapatnam, informed that admissions will be taken only after a society is formed. Read a report in the Deccan Chronicle. 3. The Andhra Pradesh government has intensified efforts to secure international status for Gannavaram airport near Vijayawada. A survey of passenger traffic from the airport is being conducted following which a report would be submitted to the state cabinet which is scheduled to clear the proposal to declare Gannavaram as an international airport and sent it to the Union civil aviation ministry for final clearance. Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with an Australian firm for beneficiation, the process to separate the required mineral from extracted ore and remove the unusable part, of low-grade iron ore. AP Mining Development Corporation (APMDC) and a subsidiary of Australia's NSL Consolidated Ltd. inked the MoU for low-grade iron ore from reserves in Kurnool and Kadapa. Read more. 5. The industrial sector in Krishna district is showing signs of brisk development considering the three mega industries, including the 800 MW-unit of Narla Tatarao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS), which are in the process of beginning commercial production. VBC Fertilizers’ manufacturing unit at Jayanthipuram near Jaggaiahpet and Satyavathi Minerals and Metals Limited (SMML)’s titanium dioxide making unit at Gudimetla are the other mega units coming up with an investment of Rs 8,100 crore.
