The rivalry between two influential film families in the Telugu industry is out in the open as actor-producer Naga Babu, the brother of ‘Mega Star’ Chiranjeevi and ‘Power Star’ Pawan Kalyan has been lashing out at MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna in a series of videos uploaded online. The rift in Tollywood has also resulted in the self-proclaimed fans of the two actors trading barbs on social media.

Naga Babu listed out six occasions where Balakrishna ‘spoke ill’ about the ‘Mega’ family, including his brothers, and strongly responded to those remarks through his official Facebook and YouTube channels.

The actor released five videos on his YouTube channel lashing out against Balakrishna, who is an MLA of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) from Hindupur. Not stopping there, he went on to make a three-minute short film, mocking Balakrishna for his misogynistic remark which he had made in 2016.

Balakrishna who was the chief guest for the audio launch of Savitri in 2016 had said, “If I play eve-teasing roles, and just follow girls, my fans will not accept. Either I should kiss them or impregnate them. That's all. We have to commit ourselves.”

Naga Babu also took offence to an earlier remark by Balakrishna calling Chiranjeevi a ‘political failure.’ Earlier in 2017, the Hindupur MLA in an interview claiming that politics was not everyone’s cup of tea had said that both Amitabh Bachchan and Chiranjeevi had failed in politics.

“What did Amitabh Bachchan achieve by coming into politics? Even in the Parliament, he was limited only to autographs and photographs. What happened to Chiranjeevi?” Balakrishna stated. Chiranjeevi had earlier floated a political party; Praja Rajyam, which he later merged with Congress.

Insinuating that his caste was ‘superior’, he claimed in the same 2017 interview, “Memu veru. Ma blood veru. Ma breed veru. (We are different. Our blood is different. Our breed is different).”

Taking potshots at this, Naga Babu shared photos of buffalos and pitbull dogs in a cryptic post wrote, “These buffalos and pitbulls are up for sale. They have sustainable breed and bloodline. Plz go through the above websites to buy buffalos and pitbulls. Just for public interest (sic).”

While the remarks made against Chiranjeevi’s family were at least one-year-old, it is unclear why Nagababu has dug out those old comments and chose to respond now.

In the late 90s and 2000s, both Balakrishna and Chiranjeevi, emerged as ‘superstars’ and competitors. While Balakrishna is the heir of actor-politician NT Rama Rao, Chiranjeevi came from a non-film background. While the duo didn’t share great friendship, their rivalry was not out in the open either.
