A man was arrested by the police from Kancheepuram district on Thursday for poisoning at least seven dogs to death, reports Oppili P of the Times Of India.

Villagers of Puliyarai Kottai, where the accused Ganapathy, 56, lives, informed the police about the culling on Wednesday. Blue Cross India Manager Dawn Williams reportedly received the complaint as well.

“Ganapathy killed three dogs on Wednesday and four more on Thursday morning,“ Williams told The Times of India.

“He laced dry fish with poison and gave them to the dogs to eat. A little after they ate the poisoned fish, the animals started to die."

Blue Cross representatives later visited the village and could retreive only five carcasses, following which the local police were informed. Sithamur police then, according to media reports, arrested Ganapathy and took him to the station.

The accused Ganapathy has been booked under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

This is not the first time that Chennai and its surrounding districts are in the news for horrific acts of cruelty against dogs.

In July 2016, two medical students had thrown a dog from the terrace of a building. The dog was later rescued by an animal rights activist based in Chennai.
