Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday announced Rs 10 lakh each to the families of four army jawans from the state killed in the avalanche in Siachen.

Announcing the relief, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in a statement in Chennai expressed grief over the death of Havildar M Elumalai of Vellore, Havildar S Kumar of Theni, Sepoy G Ganesan from Madurai and Sepoy N Ramamurthy from Krishnagiri district and conveyed her sympathies to their families.

"I was grieved to know that four soldiers from Tamil Nadu who were involved in guarding the nation were killed in the avalanche," she said in a statement in Chennai.

Jayalalithaa said she had ordered granting a sum of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased.

A total of 10 army personnel were trapped in the avalanche when it hit a high altitude post in Siachen Glacier in Ladakh on February 3 last.

One of them, Lance Naik Hanumanthappa, found alive under the snow after six days, was undergoing treatment in New Delhi while others have died.

On the same day, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa announced an overall cash relief of Rs four lakh to four persons families who died in a stampede in Tiruvannamalai on Monday . She expressed grief over the death of the four persons at the famous Lord Arunachaleswarar temple and sympathised with their families, a statement said.

The four persons had drowned at the 'Ayyan Theerthavari Kulam' at the temple when more than 2,000 devotees tried to take a holy dip along with the priests, who entered the waters with the sacred trident.
