Tamil Nadu's COVID-19 tally on Monday crossed the eight lakh mark with 1,141 new cases. The death toll due to COVID-19 mounted to 11,909 with 14 more fatalities recorded on Monday. The number of active cases of COVID-19 in the state as of Monday stood at 10,039.
Of the 1,141 new infections, 343 were from Chennai and the remainder was scattered in other regions of the state. Coimbatore district reported 124 new cases of COVID on Monday, the second highest in Tamil Nadu. The third highest number of fresh cases was reported in Chengalpattu district with 61 persons being diagnosed with COVID on Monday. The total number of persons infected by COVID-19 since earlier this year in Tamil Nadu thus stood at 8,00,029, according to a health department bulletin.
All the 14 persons whose deaths were reported on Monday had comorbidities. Of the 11,909 persons dead till Monday, 3,924 were from Chennai. The last one lakh positive cases of COVID were added in a span of 52 days, which is a significant improvement when compared with the numbers in October. In October, Tamil Nadu added one lakh cases in a span of just 20 days.
Tamil Nadu crossed seven lakh COVID-19 cases on October 22, with 3,077 fresh infections and on that day, 7,00,193 was the total number of persons who had tested positive. The state breached the six lakh mark on October 1 when the total number of cases in the state stood at 6,03,290.
1,203 patients were discharged from various hospitals on Monday after recovering from the infection. In total, 7,78,081 people have recovered from the disease as of Monday. The state also tested 63,989 samples on Monday and over 1.30 crore samples have been tested so far across the 231 labs in Tamil Nadu.
