A businessman, who had set a woman teacher ablaze in front of her students and later absconded, allegedly committed suicide on Friday.

Fifty-three-year-old Renukaradhya alias Aradhya Swamy, a Tumakuru resident and liquor businessman, was found dead near a guesthouse at Dharmasthala.

“They found the car parked near the Dharmasthala temple guesthouse. Upon questioning the guesthouse staff, it was revealed that he had rented a room there. The Dharmasthala police found him hanging from the ceiling fan in the room,” the police officer said.

Three days back on Wednesday, he had set 50-year-old Sunanda ablaze in the government primary school in Magadi taluk, in front of her students.

According to the Magadi police, the duo had previously fought over financial issues. Police said that Renukaradhya sped away in a Swift Dzire care after setting the teacher on fire. This incident was witnessed by the school staff.

The investigating team, led by DySP S Purushottam visited Renukaradhya’s home in Tumakuru on Thursday but did not find him there.

“His family was shocked to hear about the incident and said they did not know where he had gone,” an investigating officer said.

The team then began tracking Renukaradhya's car, which he had borrowed from a friend. To the police’s luck, the car’s GPS was switched on.

Police traced the car to Dharmasthala, located in Dakshina Kannada district. The Magadi police then requested the Dharmasthala police to trace the car.

The investigating team is on its way to Dharmasthala along with Renukaradhya’s family in order to identify the body. The Dharmasthala Police have not found a suicide note in the guesthouse room.

Sunanda, who had sustained 60% burns, was shifted to Victoria Hospital on Friday, as her condition is serious.

Police are waiting for the accused’s family to arrive before they declare him dead.

“He was found hanging from a red towel and a rope in room number 21 of the Prarthan Poojya guesthouse. The time of death has been pegged between 11pm and 6am in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday,” the investigating officer said.
