The Thiruvananthapuram General Hospital (GH) is facing a crisis of sorts with more than 50 surgeries having been postponed due to shortage of water.

A few surgeries were deferred even after giving enema for the operations.

“For my relative, enema was given, injections and medicines which were supposed to be given prior to the surgery were given and clothes were removed. Finally, they said surgery cannot be conducted after waiting for hours inside the operation theater,” Leela, the patient’s relative told Asianet News.

Authorities say due to construction of a new medical college, the water pipes break frequently which causes water shortage in the hospital.

Being a government hospital, prior booking is needed and patients have to wait for weeks sometimes, to get an appointment. With surgeries being deferred, this is making the patients and their relatives even more anxious.

There are some patients who are on anesthesia and this is only compounding their worries.

Patients also allege that there was no water in the hospital for the last three days, and the authorities could have informed them earlier.
