In a shocking incident, fearing that the death of a woman on the day of Amavasya (no moon day) could be a bad omen, villagers allegedly barred the woman’s relatives from performing her last rites in the village.

The incident occurred on Saturday in Turkayamjal, Abdullapur mandal.

Reportedly, elders of the village and the landlord issued a diktat to the deceased’s relatives not to perform the final rites of the dead in the village, since she died on an inauspicious day.

According to TV5, the deceased Malathi, who was a resident of YSR Colony, died on Friday at around 1.30am while being treated at a private hospital.

After her body was brought home, the landlord and the villagers raised objections. They said that she died on a new moon day, which is a bad sign, according to Hindu beliefs.

The villagers told relatives of the deceased to take away the body from the village and perform the final rites on the village outskirts.

Following their diktat, the relatives took away the body from the village and performed the last rites at the shore of the village’s lake.

According to reports, Malathi had recently given birth to a baby, and had been suffering from an illness since then.

Speaking to TNM, Adibatla Inspector Govinda Reddy, said, “We went to the spot after getting to know about the incident. It is true that the landlord and the villagers had shunned her relatives and told them that if her (Malathi’s) dead body was kept in the village, it could bring doom to the village.”

Reddy said, “Though we didn’t receive any complaint, out of concern, my staff went to the spot and even enquired with the landlord if the allegation was true. However, the landlord claimed that the allegation is untrue, and said that he had allowed to keep the body at home. But her relatives themselves took away the body.”

He added, “Nobody came forward to file a complaint including her husband. So we didn’t file any case.
