The News Minute | December 24, 2014 | 8:10 am ISTThe AP Assembly on Tuesday witnessed the ruling TDP and opposition YSRCP join hands and agree to shrink the area of Lake Kolleru, the famous fresh water lake located in Krishna and West Godavari districts. After a stormy session, AP chief minister Chandrababu Naidu and opposition leader Jaganmohan Reddy agreed to complete what Jagan’s father and former chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had started in 2008, a report in the Times of India adds.If reduced, the lake area would diminish to contour 3 and free the area below for fish and paddy cultivation and in turn help farmers protect their livelihood.Naidu also said that he would help around 3 lakh farmers without harming the ecology of the lake – which is a declared wildlife sanctuary and added that an expert committee and a technical committee would be appointed to guide the government. The decision to reduce the contour level of Kolleru is expected to generate protest among lake lovers and environmentalist circles.
