Actor Amala Paul on Saturday appeared before the economic offenses wing (EOW) of the crime branch in Kochi, with relation to the tax evasion row for registering a car in Puducherry.

She was summoned by the EOW for clarity in a statement that the actor had given earlier regarding the case. Officials said that they are trying to avoid an arrest and therefore have asked the actor to visit and clarify her statements.

“We are trying to avoid arrest in the case and we have asked her regarding the discrepancies in her statement. No arrest has been recorded yet and a decision on whether to make an arrest will only be taken later,” said an officer, reports TOI.

According to the officials, Amala is sticking to her earlier statement in a petition that she filed, that the Mercedes Benz of registration number PY-05-D-0500, was registered at Puducherry and she had rented a home there.

The petition also added that the vehicle was registered at the address of the rented house in Puducherry and the vehicle is used in Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and Bengaluru mainly. The petition also added that a rent of Rs 5,500 is being paid for the house in Puducherry.

The case against the actor for the alleged tax evasion for her luxury car was registered by the Thiruvananthapuram unit of the crime branch on the basis of the complaint filed by the Transport Commissionerate.

The actor had earlier alleged before the HC that the case was false and that the documents were forged.

Meanwhile, officials also said that a formal rent agreement was drafted only after August 1st, 2017 even as the building was rented out in January 2017.
