ISTPolitical parties in Tamil Nadu have slammed the Andhra Pradesh government over the killing of at least 20 alleged red sandalwood smugglers many of whom hail from Tamil NaduMDMK leader Vaiko criticised the neighbour-state government and called for a probe into the incident. He said that the police who were responsible for the killing should be tried for murder.DMK Chief M Karunanidhi strongly condemned the episode in which over 100 smugglers were said to ha have entered the ageg . He said “Despite such incidents taking place over the past few months, both state govts did not discuss and take steps to control this and now 20 lives are lost - at least now both states shud ensure such incidents do not take place again - condolences to families of those who died and urge both state govts to provide them with compensation”On the other hand, TNCC president EVKS Elangovan demanded an “impartial joint probe” by both Andhra Pradhes and Tamil Nadu into the deaths. Twelve of those killed were labourers from different parts of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu DGP Ashok Kumar has now sought a detailed report from SPs belonging to Tiruvannamalai and Vellore on the deaths of the alleged red sandalwood smugglers at the Seschalam forest near Tirupati in the Chittoor district of Andhra Pradhesh.The People's Union for Civil Liberties called for immediate action on the killing saying ,"We demand filing of murder cases against the concerned Police officers and enquiry by Sitting Judge of H.C.level immediately" Tamil Nadu's BJP President, Tamilisai Soundararajan, said "Shooting anybody is nt justified. Nobody is about law. Even if they did some mistake, there should be a proper enquiry and they can be punished according to law". "Shooting anybody just like that is not acceptable," she said.
