The News Minute | June 20, 2014 | 11:51 am After Amma canteen, Amma salt, Amma water, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to launch Amma tea. Amma tea is a product of Tantea (Tamil Nadu Tea Plantation Corportation), a government enterprise. The government plans to add brand value to Tantea, which could increase Tantea’s market share to over 20% in around 5 years, from the current 2%. The Tantea could get an ISI certification for its products. 28 new machines have been purchased recently to produce different varieties of tea, including green tea and organic tea. The corporation has faced losses in some of the years in the past, but officials are hopeful that building a brand around it could generate profits. Tantea is one of the largest producers of black tea in the country and has tea estates in Coimbatore and Nilgiris district. It owns eight factories and has an over 10,000 strong workforce. 90% of Tantea’s produce is auctioned with the rest being sold in retain market. Tantea was set up in 1968 for the rehabilitation of Sri Lankan repatriates.
