The BJP in Karnataka has once again started a campaign against Tipu Jayanti. Lashing out at the Department of Kannada and Culture, Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha mocked the government’s decision to go ahead with the celebration.

“The ruling government is indulging in hypocrisy by celebrating Tipu Jayanti. Siddaramaiah’s name has now changed to Sultan Siddaramaiah,” Pratap Simha told the media in Bengaluru on Saturday.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event organised by Advocates for Democracy, Pratap Simha said that the Congress government had to go back and study the history books to “know the real Tipu”.

“Let them (Congress government) go through the pages of history. If they do, they will realise that Tipu imposed the language spoken by Persians on Kannada speaking people in the state. Ironically, the Department of Kannada and Culture is spearheading the celebration. Celebrating Tipu Jayanti is like the Karnataka Forest Department celebrating Veerapan Jayanti,” Pratap Simha mocked the ruling government.

The Mysuru-Kodagu MP also called Tipu a “coward” who “hid from the British”.

“Everyone calls Tipu the ‘Tiger of Mysore’ but while he was at war with the British, he hid inside the palace instead of fighting bravely. He was a coward. If you look back, there has never been a single Muslim ruler who was brave. They were all cruel instead. They were all murderers and not brave warriors,” Pratap Simha added.

“We have been opposing Tipu Jayanti since 2015. If the government really wants to celebrate a Jayanti, it should be of somebody who has stood for some ideals. He should have set some noble precedent. What idea does Tipu stand for? What are his contributions but trying to ethnically cleanse Kodavas?” the BJP leader said.

In October this year, Pratap Simha had made similar comments on Tipu. At a state-level conference held at the Gururaj Kalyana Mantapa on Race Course road by various organisations to oppose the government's plan to hold Tipu Jayanti, Pratap Simha had mocked Tipu.

The discussions focused on understanding Tipu Sultan and his tyranny. Among those present were members of the VHP, RSS and the BJP.

At the time, Pratap Simha had said that “Tipu can be a role model only for Islamists”.

He also alleged that CM Siddaramiah’s decision to hold Tipu Jayantiis was just vote bank politics and “He is encouraging jihadists in the state,” Pratap Simha had said.
