The Telangana State Board of Intermediate Education (TSBIE) on Sunday claimed that at least 20 students in the state who had killed themselves after the results of the board examinations for first year and second year were released, had not done so due to errors in publication of the marksheets.
The board, which said that it re-verified the answer scripts of 22 students who killed themselves and 3 students who had attempted to do so, added that it found no major errors which would make the students pass.
“The board got all the (answer) scripts of candidates who committed suicide and got it re-verified by the subject experts by forming a committee and checked for any errors either in valuing of the answer scripts, posting of marks, or for totalling mistakes. In all cases, the board found that there were no major errors which would change the marks of the student from fail to pass,” the board reportedly said in a release.
The board said that the deaths were a result of dejection due to poor marks.
A total of 9.74 lakh students appeared in Intermediate first and second year exams held in February-March. The Board announced the exam results on April 18.
However, an error resulted in many bright students receiving very low marks. Some students even said that they were marked 'Absent of Fail' when they had attended the exam.
Following an uproar by the students and parents and protests by student bodies and opposition parties, the state government announced free re-verification of answer sheets of 3.28 lakh students who failed to secure pass marks.
A three-member committee, formed by the government to probe the fiasco, found that the BIE and Globarena Technologies, the IT firm whose services were hired by the BIE, both committed mistakes in preparing the results.
