The News Minute | March 18, 2015 | 10.20 am ISTThe murder of a 27-year-old mother and her two children in Coimbatore has put a man behind bars with a double death sentence and two terms of life imprisonment.A Senthil, a tenant in a house owned by the victim’s mother-in-law will have to undergo seven years of imprisonment, reported The New Indian Express. On June 1, 2014, the slain bodies of the three were found by the victim's in-laws after being stabbed fatally by Senthil. Said to have attempted to rape the victim, Vatsala Devi, he had then killed six year-old Mahilan who had seen the crime. He had then gone on to kill the younger child, Praneeth, as Senthil had feared that a crying baby would attract the attention of the neighbours. According to the report, the evidence collected represented the effort put in by the police in probing the case which has helped in deciding the quantum of punishment for Senthil. The incident had occurred after Senthil had gone to Devi’s house demanding the return of the remaining advance money he had paid her for house rent. She however told him that she would pay the balance of Rs. 5300 within two days. However, when he returned the same evening and made sexual advances towards her, she resisted. It was then that he stabbed her with a kitchen knife and went on to kill her two children. To make it appear like a murder for gain , he had removed Devi’s mangalsutra, reported The Hindu. The autopsy reports revealed that Mahilan had been stabbed 21 times, his mother an equal number of times, and the six-month old baby, Praneeth 12 times. Eyewitness who had see Senthil leave the crime scene, along with evidence of DNA of Senthil that matched those found at the house clinched the case, and sealed his fate. TweetFollow @thenewsminute
