A SpiceJet technician died in Kolkata after the hydraulic landing gear door of an aircraft closed on him early Wednesday morning. He was carrying out maintenance work on the aircraft at the NSCBI airport in Kolkata, an official said.

Rohit Bhushan Pandey, a trainee technician, died at 1.45 a.m. "He was doing maintenance work on a Q400 aircraft, and accidentally the landing gear door closed on him. He died on the spot," the airport official told IANS.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation will carry out an inquiry into the incident, the official said.

A SpiceJet spokesperson said Pandey was working on the main landing gear wheel well area on the right side of the aircraft, which was parked in bay no. 32 when the accident took place.

"Extremely saddened to share that our technician Rohit Pandey passed away last night in an unfortunate incident at Kolkata airport,” a spokesperson said.

"Inadvertently, the main landing gear hydraulic door closed and he got stuck in between the hydraulic door flaps. The Hydraulic doors were broken to rescue Mr Pandey but he was declared dead. The entire SpiceJet family stands together in grief in this unfortunate incident," SpiceJet said in its statement to the media
