A celebration of Ambedkar Jayanthi, organised by the Ambedkar Students Association(ASA), at the University of Hyderabad was forced to be held outside the gates of the campus as the university authorities allegedly refused to let invited speakers enter the campus.

Besides faculty members from the university, the ASA had also invited Prakash Ambedkar, Dr BR Ambedkar’s grandson, and Radhika Vemula, Rohith Vemula’s mother, as guests for the occasion. It was these two speakers who were allegedly not allowed into the campus.

Ph.D. Scholar, Sunkanna Velpula, told TNM, “The chief guests of our program were blocked at the main gate itself by security officials on the instructions of the University administration. So they are speaking at the main gate itself.”

According to representatives of ASA, every year on April 14 students celebrate the birth anniversary of BR Ambedkar by garlanding his statue. However, they also choose one other day in the second half of April on which they celebrate Ambedkar Jayanthi more elaborately and also organize beef dinner.

For those students who do not consume beef, the festival organisers also arranged a dinner of chicken. This year the organisers of the festival have reportedly prepared a beef dinner for 1500 students.

“We have been following this tradition for the past nine years. But this year it is also being celebrated in memory of Rohith Vemula,”said Sunkanna.

“After the speeches, everyone at the campus will eat beef together and for people who don’t eat beef, we have also prepared 100 kg of chicken,” he added.

Faculty members Prof Periyasami, Prof Krishna, Dr K Y Ratnam and Dr Thathagat Sen Gupta were the other speakers invited for the event.
