The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) might fail to meet multiple deadlines to fill potholes or fail to pay wages to pourakarmikas for months, but the civic body wants to retain Bengaluru’s tag of India’s IT capital. On Wednesday, the Economist Intelligence Unit had listed Bengaluru as the city with the best digital environment globally, coming ahead of San Francisco.

Now, the BBMP will issue digital door numbers for every address within Bengaluru.

Digital Identification Numbers (DIN) which will be an alphanumeric code of 7-11 characters will replace the long addresses which are in use now. This will eliminate difficulty for ambulances and other emergency services in finding their way through interiors, as it will work on Google Maps also. Even otherwise, it will help people locate places more easily on their smartphones.

Deccan Herald’s Bharath Joshi reports that the BBMP has been working on the project since February and BBMP's own GIS-Enabled Property Tax Information System will be the backbone of the DIN system.

"The project will be finalised this month. It will help locate an address to its exact point as the code is attached with latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates. If the code is keyed into Google Maps, the location is identified instantly," BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad told DH.

report in The Times of India by Manu Aiyappa in February said that the state government had proposed this program under the Smart City Mission Project of the central government.

Bengaluru succeeded in becoming a ‘Smart City’ in its third attempt in 2017.

However, Bengaluru is not the first city in India to have digital door numbers. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation had floated a tender for a similar project.

Zippr, a startup, won the tender for Rs 5 crore. The company further allows businesses or organisations to have door numbers of their choice at a premium, similar to VIP car numbers.
